Since BP opened the first Scout camp on August 1st 1907, Scouting has spread across the globe to become the world’s largest youth organisation. A hundred years of Scouting around the World is a unique opportunity for Scouts Australia to launch Scouting into its second century, providing benefit for the future of our movement. Moreover it is a time to celebrate the achievements of 100 years of Scouting.SA Branch Events 2007 3pm till 9.30pm This exciting event with a focus on the future of Scouting was held around the city. It will started mid afternoon and activities with a space theme were held mostly along the Torrens, but also in Torrens Parade Ground and Rundle Mall. Activities included laser skirmish, the climbing tower and GPS games to name a few. A unique feature of the event was that the day’s activities and scoring was run by a central computer system via SMS. A concert and reaffirmation of the Promise occurred in the evening with a super screen broadcasting highlights from the day. Country groups were invited to match up with city groups to stay overnight in Adelaide. The event was promoted to and open to the public. More Information: www.c3.sa.scouts.com.au
The Great Canoe Expedition (Border to the Beach)14th – 29th April 2007 The Scout Canoe section held a long distance paddle from the Victorian Border to the Murray Mouth – a distance of 636kms. It was conducted over 15 stages. Participants chose to paddle the whole distance or just one stage, the choice was theirs but a core team chose to paddle the entire distance.
Join-in-St Georges Day All sections were encouraged to add a St Georges Day evening to their programs, but particularly Cubs and Joeys. A package was sent to each group explaining who St George was and how, being our Patron Saint, he is important to Scouting.
Scouting’s Sunrise At 8am on August the 1st 1907 Baden-Powell blew the Kudu horn to signal the beginning of the first ever Scout camp. 100 years on, 28 million Scouts world wide will celebrate the occasion in 216 countries. Each country blew the Kudu horn at 8am and had their members reaffirm their Promise. Here in Australia the main celebrations were be in Sydney and Melbourne but South Australian Headquarters ran a media promotion that all members were invited to, followed by a breakfast for our corporate sponsors and anyone interested at the Hyatt Regency in Adelaide.
Brownsea Island Re-enactment The Scout section held a re-enactment of the first Scout Camp held by BP on Brownsea Island. The program included activities from the first ever Scout camp held on the island to educate our young people about the history of Scouting, but also included modern activities to reflect the future of Scouting. At the same time a Brownsea Island Re-Enactment was be held in the UK.
50 years of Woodhouse Celebration A state wide camp at Woodhouse was held as well as a public display of memorabilia in the Old House. The camp was be a ‘back to basics’ style camp and the SSS put on a display of an old style campsite. Many exciting activities and competitions were run on the weekend!
