National Redress Scheme
Scouts SA opted into the Federal Government Redress Scheme on the 18th of June 2018 after our State Government made its announcement that it would participate in the scheme with other Australian states. Scouts SA needed to wait for that announcement as it was not possible for us to opt in before the State Government made its decision.
Scouts Australia were one of the first institutions to agree to opt in to the National Redress Scheme and as has been the case for many years before the Royal Commission, we continue to lean forward ready to apologise and support people who were abused.
The National Redress Scheme commenced on the 1st of July 2018 from which time applicants can now raise a redress claim through to the Department of Social Services.
Given that our State Government has only just recently announced its intention to participate, it still needs to raise and pass the required state legislation to enter the scheme. This is a legal and constitutional requirement. This means that applications can commence on 1 July 2018 although the application will not be able to be finalised until the state legislation is passed. Therefore, there may be some delay in finalising your application but we expect the SA legislation to be passed in the latter half of 2018 or early 2019.
